News Plants absorb carbon dioxide and give out oxygen during photosynthesis. Some of this carbon is transferred to soil as plants die and decompose. Plants and soil absorb roughly a quarter of the greenhouse gases that humans release into the atmosphere. Findings Recent research has found that under a warming climate they may start absorbing less greenhouse gases. As the climate warms, soils across much of the planet gradually gets drier.
