News The increasing number of extreme events is causing dieback of Arctic plants or ‘browning’ across Arctic regions, a study has found. Findings Scientists studying the Arctic which is warming twice as fast as the global average – found that plant dieback following these events could significantly reduce the ability of Arctic ecosystems to help combat climate change. Previously, scientists had found that increasing summer warmth in the Arctic was encouraging vegetation to grow, turning areas green. Beyond News The sarcophagus, an ancient coffin, was one of two found earlier this month by a French-led mission in the northern area of El-Asasef, a necropolis on the western bank of the Nile. The first one had been opened earlier and examined by Egyptian antiquities officials. One sarcophagus was rishi-style, which dates back to the 17th dynasty, while the other sarcophagus was from the 18th dynasty. Findings A relatively small proportion of the finance goes towards efforts to enable the most vulnerable to adapt. On a comparable basis, the global climate finance flows increased by 17% in 2015-16 from 2013-14 levels. One central conclusion is that the growth in global climate finance seen in 2015 was largely driven by high levels of new private investment in renewable energy, the largest segment of the global total.
