Bangladeshis ‘living illegally’ in U.P. to be identified for deportation
News
- Weeks after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister suggested a National Register For Citizens-type drive in the State, the police have been asked to identify Bangladeshis and other foreign nationals “living illegally” in the State so that they can be deported.

- The police have been asked to identify locations such as city outskirts, railway stations, bus stations and “new busties” where “such Bangladeshis and other foreign nationals take shelter” and carry out their verification under videography.
- Bangladeshis and foreigners who have been living in the State illegally would be identified and their documents verified. Those whose documents were found to be false would be deported.
- The police have also been directed to cancel on a “priority” basis the “fake documents” allegedly procured by Bangladeshis and other foreigners to avail citizenship of India and documents such as ration card, voter card, driving licence, arms licence, passport, and Aadhaar card.
- Action would be taken against the intermediaries and government officials who helped these people avail these documents.
- Police have also been directed to obtain the fingerprint of Bangladeshis and other foreigners following which a district-wise computerised database would be maintained. Owners and managers of various businesses and construction agencies have been asked to keep the identity proof of all the labourers who work under them.
Pakistan Army lobs mortars at forward posts in J&K’s Poonch

- The Pakistan Army targeted forward posts and villages in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district with mortar shells and small arms firing.
Violated the ceasefire
- The Indian Army retaliated and heavy exchange of fire was still going on when last reports were received, a defence spokesman said.
- According to officials, Pakistan violated the ceasefire over 2,000 times along the LoC this year, leaving 21 people dead and scores of others injured.
- India has repeatedly called upon Pakistan to ask its forces to adhere to the 2003 ceasefire understanding and maintain peace and tranquillity along the LoC and the International Border.
Tripura govt to move apex court over HC ban on animal sacrifice

- The Tripura government would soon file a special leave petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court over the Tripura High Court ban on animal sacrifice in all the temples of the state.

- A division bench of the Tripura High Court had pronounced that “no person including the state shall be allowed to sacrifice any animal or bird within the precincts of any of the temples within the state of Tripura.”
- The High Court bench had directed all the district magistrates and superintendents of police of the state to ensure implementation of the order forthwith.
- It also directed the state chief secretary to install CCTV cameras at two major temples of the state Devi Tripureswari temple and Chaturdas Devata temple where a large number of animals are sacrificed.
- The bench had also asked the chief secretary to obtain soft copies of the CCTV recordings every month.

- Indian External Affairs Minister defended his country’s right to buy a missile defense system from Russia despite the threat of sanctions from the United States.

- India, a Cold War ally of the Soviet Union, last year agreed to buy five S-400 systems for $5.2 billion, and Russia has said that delivery is on track.
- Under a 2017 law, the United States imposes sanctions against countries over “major” arms purchases from Russia due to Moscow’s military involvement in Ukraine and Syria and alleged meddling in U.S. elections.
- The United States has threatened sanctions to force all countries to stop buying oil from Iran as it seeks to curb the clerical regime’s influence in the Middle East.
- In May, the Trump administration ended waivers for countries including India, formerly a leading customer for Iranian oil
- India has been teaming up to expand Iran’s Chabahar port, a way to ensure a supply route to Afghanistan that bypasses Pakistan, New Delhi’s rival and historically of the Taliban.

Relief works on in rain-battered Bihar
News
- Relief and rescue operations are on in full swing in Bihar, including in State capital Patna, as people struggled to recover from the devastation wrought by torrential rain, which has claimed close to 30 lives and caused heavy damage to property.

- Relief materials are being distributed by NDRF and SDRF personnel who are reaching out to people marooned inside homes, helping in relocation of those who so desired, and delivering packets of food, medicines and packaged drinking water to them.
- Indian Air Force helicopters hovered over flooded areas, especially the densely populated ones dropping packets of relief material as residents stood atop roofs.
- According to the State Disaster Management Department, 14 districts have been hit by flood-like situation caused by torrential rainfall. Most of them are situated along the Ganga.
Banking system safe, stable: RBI

- With the panic over the crisis at the Punjab and Maharashtra Cooperative Bank threatening to snowball, the Reserve Bank of India stepped in to assure depositors.

- The central bank issued a statement that the Indian banking system was ‘safe and stable’.
- Shares of commercial banks took a beating as a crisis of confidence gripped the banking sector.
- Private banks’ shares also took a beating due to concerns over exposure to the non-banking financial sector. The Sensex closed 361.92 points, or 0.94% lower, to close at 38,305.41 points.
- Amid the falling banking stocks and social media rumours about the health of the Indian banking system following the crisis at the Punjab and Maharashtra Cooperative Bank, the Reserve Bank of India issued a statement asking people not to pay heed to such speculation.
- Last week, the regulator imposed restrictions, including a cap on withdrawals from the multi-State cooperative bank due to financial irregularities.
